Farhana

My name is Farhana Rahman, I am from Bangladesh. I have completed my Master of Science. I live in Bankstown.
I am kind-hearted, flexible but organised, a good listener, and enthusiastic by nature. I love to watch movies, play games, visit beautiful places around me, and love to try new cuisines, mainly Lebanese, Mexican, Indian, Bangladeshi, Vietnamese, Chinese, Portuguese, Japanese, and others; basically, I am a foodie person.
I completed my peer mentoring training with DDAlliance last year. I came to learn so many skills on how to be a competent peer mentor. After the training I have been practicing these mentoring skills with my fellow peers. I am ready to work as a peer mentor and support my fellow peers as I now have the skills and experience to be a good mentor.
My passion is to support and work with people with physical disability from multicultural backgrounds who face barriers like myself. My brother had chronic disability and this meant that he had major health and mobility issues. He was a quick learner and a talented person. Unfortunately,we lost him. His death had a significant impact on us as a family. We experienced so much sadness and grief. For me the effect of his death, motivated me to work with people with disability.I feel I can fully understand my fellow peers who are in a similar circumstance as myself, dealing with a number of issues.
Previously I have worked with people who were quite disadvantaged and were from different cultures. I feel I have strong skills in research, computation, and problem-solving.As a mentor I can support you with sharing helpful information to assist you in making your own decisions.
I am particularly interested in supporting women peers who seek to enhance their emotional and physical well-being. As I am quite an independent person I feel I can support you as my fellow peers to stand up for yourself. I can support you in practicing and developing your communication skills (public speaking, official correspondence, and others).
I believe that a mentor can be more than a family member or carer, because as a mentor I have already walked in your shoes. My passion is for people with disability to live a good life and be included in the community and not to standalone.

Looking forward to working together to make our lives better!
